چکیده

The problem of detecting the visible and hidden areas of a topographic surface from a given viewpoint is well known, and has applications in GIS and other fields. The computational geometry literature is rich with solutions based on a polygonal representation of the surface. This work confronts the problem by working directly on the Digital Elevation Map which represents the terrain surface. We present an algorithm that processes discrete lines of sight from the viewpoint t o the surface perimeter, and tests the unit-sized terrain elements along the discrete cross-sections defined by these lines. The algorithm is very efficient, performing O(n) testing operations, consisting of a few additions and no more than one multiplication each, where n is the number of the terrain elements in the map.

Fast Horizon Computation at All Points of a Terrain With Visibility and Shading Applications

A terrain is most often represented with a digital elevation map consisting of a set of sample points from the terrain surface. This paper presents a fast and practical algorithm to compute the horizon, or skyline, at all sample points of a terrain. The horizons are useful in a number of applications, including the rendering of self{shadowing displacement maps, visibility culling for faster igh...

Stealth Navigation: Planning and Behaviors

Stealth navigation is a fundamental capability for a scout vehicle to e ectively perform reconnaissance missions. One component of stealth is the ability to plan paths that minimize visibility of the vehicle from target locations. This paper demonstrates a stealth planning system using visibility analysis on digital terrain elevation maps for path planning. Goal locations can be user speci ed o...

GIS-based analysis of spatial distribution patterns of growing degree-days for agricultural applications in Iran

The geographical distribution of growing degree-days (GDDs) within Iran was studied using GIS-based maps. GDDs were calculated using daily thermal parameters (daily maximum and minimum air temperature). Based on the purpose of the study and climatic conditions of Iran, the average value of 5?C was chosen for GDD calculation. The calculations were carried out using daily weather data of 113 mete...

Presenting a Morphological Based Approach for Filtering The Point Cloud to Extract the Digital Terrain Model

The Digital terrain model is an important geospatial product used as the basis of many practical projects related to geospatial information. Nowadays, a dense point cloud can be generated using the LiDAR data. Actually, the acquired point cloud of the LiDAR, presents a digital surface model that contains ground and non-ground objects. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach of ex...
